Innovating in surface protection of sand cores
Challenge closed
THE CHALLENGE
The sand core-making is an essential step of Tupy’s product manufacturing process. The sand core produces internal cavities and re-entrant angles in the castings and then goes through the mold making that gives the casting its outer shape.
Before the molding process, the sides of the sand cores need to go through a painting procedure to protect the surface. This procedure uses a water-based ink as follows:
Then, the sand core passes through a drying oven, where hot air and exhaust remove moisture, renewing the air inside.
The current challenge aims to find solutions to speed up the time allocated to this protection process. These could be improvements in the current process, new technologies, raw materials alternatives, or new surface protection methods.
EXPECTED SOLUTION LEVEL
We expect a solution with functional validation of components in a laboratory, pilot, or industrial environment and the ability to perform a Proof of Concept (PoC) or a pilot at Tupy’s core-making operation.
TUPY’S PARTICIPATION IN THE CHALLENGE
– Technical support to validate the solution proposal;
– Access to Tupy’s core-making department teams.
