Tupy reuses water in industrial processes

Santa Catarina multinational company stops consuming about 1 billion liters of water, due to the reuse of the resource

The industrial sector has advanced in discussions about the use of water resources. After all, according to CNI (Brazilian Confederation of Industry), industries consume 10% of the water captured for use in Brazil. Tupy invests in projects and initiatives for the treatment and reuse of water used in its manufacturing processes. As a result, the Company ceases to use about 1 billion liters of drinking water per year, contributing to the conservation of this resource and to the reduction of effluent generation.

For this, the ten industrial and sanitary Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) that the Company has in its manufacturing plants are fundamental. In Aveiro, Portugal, for example, 98% of the effluents from industrial and sanitary processes are treated and returned to the processes. In Joinville and Betim, this percentage rises to 100%.

Since 2007, the Company has adopted new reuse processes and reduced drinking water consumption by approximately 50%. There have been more than 60 investment projects in the last 4 years, aimed at improving the filtration system, acquisition of tanks, mixers, pumps and flowmeters, among others.

“Water is a vital input to the Company’s operations, which makes its reduction and reuse even more important. In 2022, we invested approximately R$76 million, aiming at the implementation of technologies to promote the improvement of air, soil/surface and groundwater quality, as well as the greater recirculation of effluents in our processes,” says Thamires Prado Brito, Tupy’s Corporate Sustainability leader.

Get to know the water cycle at Tupy

1 – Consumption: water is used in our production processes, food preparation, cleaning and bathrooms.

2 – Disposal: The water that was used becomes an effluent and is directed to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

3 – Treatment: at the WWTP, our effluents are treated by different processes, which can be physical, chemical and biological. What is not reused, goes back to the environment, following all quality standards.

4 – Reuse: in some plants, up to 100% of the volume of treated effluents that return to the production process are reused in several ways: cooling tower, cooling of slag and the structure of the furnace, atmospheric emission control systems, and preparation of machining inputs, in addition to chemical rinsing processes.
