Tupy and MWM sign contract with Primato for production of renewable fuel and clean electricity

Agreement, which marks Tupy’s entry into the Energy & Decarbonization sector, also includes the vehicle transformation of the cooperative’s fleet

Tupy and MWM have entered into a partnership with the agricultural cooperative, Primato, to build a biogas plant in Ouro Verde do Oeste (PR), which will produce clean energy through the use of pig waste, and renewable fuel, with the generation of biofuel. This is the first agreement established after the combination between the two Companies, concluded in November 2022, which had as one of the main objectives the promotion of viable solutions for decarbonization.

The project starts with 13 properties, but there is potential to reach all members, who will be able to maintain their activities with the help of a clean energy source, resulting in less environmental impact and reduction in operating costs.

“Through this partnership with Primato, it will be possible to develop a complete solution for the use of waste from the production process on the farm, so that both small and large rural producers can neutralize the emission of Greenhouse Gases [GHG] generated by their activities, obtaining, at the same time, a reduction in operating costs and an increase in productivity,” says Fernando Cestari de Rizzo, CEO of Tupy.

According to José Eduardo Luzzi, CEO of MWM, the biogas production chain will begin with the collection of organic waste on rural properties.“ After being transported to the plant environment, they will be treated and, with the aid of biodigesters and the filtering and monitoring system, transformed into clean, high-quality energy to power the biomethane-powered generators produced by MWM.”

The agreement also foresees that MWM will make the vehicle transformation of the current fleet of diesel engines for gas. This is because the waste, which will be transformed into renewable fuel, can be applied both to move Primato trucks and to subsidize the electricity consumption of members.

“The same truck that takes feed for livestock will be supplied with the biomethane produced at the plant. This innovation will provide producers with extra income, in addition to contributing to the environment and meeting the benefits of the circular economy, promoting more sustainable food production, ”explains Léo Sabadin, president of Primato.

Still within this system, there is the generation of biofertilizers, which replace mineral fertilizers. And by doing so, they reduce the cost of and dependence on imported products for producers and also contribute to reducing the carbon footprint.

The design of the project is the result of the investment of Tupy and MWM in Research & Development. “In order for us to develop technologies like these, we need to invest in knowledge generation. In addition to partnerships with Brazilian universities, fostering national science, we have researchers in the areas of biology, zootechnics and agronomy in our team,” says Cristian, the director of MWM responsible for the project.
