High thermal efficiency hydrogen-powered engines are the subject of a Tupy case study to be presented in Germany
April 14, 2023
Tupy is presenting the development in partnership with AVL and Westport on demonstration engine during the Hannover Fair on April 17
The hydrogen combustion engine is one of the zero-emission alternatives considered by European legislation for the decarbonization of transport. Attentive to this movement, Tupy, a Brazilian multinational that develops and produces structural components in cast iron of high geometric and metallurgical complexity, already develops projects focused on hydrogen engines. The theme will be presented on April 17 at the Hannover International Fair in Germany, which runs until April 21.
In partnership with AVL, an Austrian automotive engineering company, and Westport, a Canadian fuel injection systems company, Tupy has been applying a high-pressure direct injection technology that gives hydrogen engines equal or better thermal efficiency than diesel engines. In parallel with the development of the engine, experiments were carried out on the penetration of hydrogen in the cast iron alloys, as well as on its mechanical influence.
The development of cast iron alloys with greater resistance in hydrogen operation is one of Tupy’s Research & Development (R&D) focuses. “With these results we were able to achieve hydrogen concentration levels in the iron alloys of the same order as the critical levels for highly resistant steel alloys. While the steels presented severe embrittlement, the iron alloys did not have their mechanical properties modified”, explains André Ferrarese, Director of Tupy Tech. “These results are exciting for the development of hydrogen engines”.
For heavy-duty vehicles, it is an excellent sustainable alternative because it presents reduced cost, great efficiency in high operating loads, tolerance to the use of non-pure hydrogen, globally distributed production and maintenance infrastructure, in addition to presenting durability much superior to any other zero emission solution.
About the Hannover Messe
The Hannover Messs is considered the leading international technology event for the industry. In 2023, the theme will be “Industrial Transformation – Making a Difference”. The fair will be held from April 17 to 21 in the city of Hannover, Germany and is positioned once again as a differentiator of trends and directions for the industrial and manufacturing segment, focusing on more efficient processes and integration. Artificial Intelligence, Energy Management, Carbon Neutral Production and Industry 4.0, in addition to Hydrogen and fuel cells will also be some of the topics covered at the event.
About TUPY
A Brazilian multinational company that develops and produces structural components in cast iron of high geometric and metallurgical complexity. These engineering solutions are applied in the transportation, infrastructure, agribusiness and energy generation sectors and contribute to people’s quality of life by promoting access to health, basic sanitation, drinking water, food production and distribution and global trade. Its production is concentrated in Brazilian factories, in Betim/MG, Joinville/SC and São Paulo/SP, and abroad, in the cities of Aveiro, Portugal, and in Saltillo and Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. In addition, it has commercial offices in Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and the USA.
