Facts about the Company show the evolution of the industry in the largest city in the state

On March 9, besides its 172nd birthday, one of Joinville’s symbols turns 85 years old, Tupy. The Company’s history includes the most industrial city of Santa Catarina. An industry that contributes to the growth of Joinville and stands out for technological innovation and technical knowledge.

In 1938, Fundição Tupy S.A was founded by partners Albano Schmidt, Hermann Metz and Arno Schwarz. Since then, the Company has grown, crossed borders and, today, is a world reference in research, development and manufacture of high complexity structural components in cast iron. Through these components, it contributes to the promotion of access to health, basic sanitation, drinking water, and other basic needs for greater quality of life. And do you know about this industry in Joinville? In this text, with eight and a half facts, you will get to know the multinational company from Joinville and connect with it.

1 – Tupy is a Brazilian company in the metallurgy sector, which produces structural components in cast iron of high geometric and metallurgical complexity. They are engineering solutions that are applied in the sectors of cargo transportation, infrastructure, agribusiness and energy generation. Last year it acquired MWM,  thus entering the Energy & Decarbonization, Maritime and Replacement sector.

2 – Did you know that Tupy is considered a multinational company? Multinational companies are defined as those companies that have headquarters installed in a particular country and have branches spread in other countries. Tupy is a multinational company headquartered in Joinville/SC and its production is concentrated in the city of Santa Catarina. It also has factories in São Paulo/SP and Betim/MG and, abroad, in the cities of Saltillo and Ramos Arizpe, in Mexico, and in Aveiro, Portugal. In addition, it has commercial offices in Germany, Brazil, USA, Netherlands and Italy.

3 – Tupy has been a publicly traded company since 1966. Companies that are publicly traded are described as Corporations (S.A.), in which the capital consists of shares that can be traded on the Stock Exchange, hence the name Tupy S.A. With this model, the investor who owns the shares of a given company becomes the owner of a small portion of it and will benefit from its appreciation and distributed dividends.

4 – Tupy works with product recycling. In 2021, 97% of the metallic material used in the manufacturing process came from recycling. There are more than 500 thousand tons per year, transformed into products with high added value, minimizing the environmental impact and the use of natural resources. For every ton produced with scrap, we stop emitting 1.2 tons of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs).

5 – Who are the Tupy Transformers? Among Tupy’s Values is the Community. This is because the Company has always understood that it must have an active participation in the socioeconomic development of the regions in which it operates. One of the initiatives in this regard is the Tupy Transformers, a corporate volunteer program that seeks to encourage and involve employees in social actions in the community. Currently, there are 211 employees in Brazil and Mexico who participate in projects and actions supported by the company.

6 – Tupy’s knowledge base is based on metallurgy and deep knowledge in materials, and with each acquisition, new talents have joined the team, also bringing new competencies, such as machining, assembly, and engine engineering. To this end, it has a robust R&D team with about 2,500 engineers and technicians. Tupy’s infrastructure includes more than 30 of its own laboratories and also partnerships established with universities around the world.

7 – Tupy develops and accelerates other companies. In addition to co-developing with customers and partnering with universities and research institutes, Tupy has a startup accelerator, ShiftT, which unites Tupy’s structure and expertise with the talent of entrepreneurs, creating shared value and sustainable development. In the first two cycles, there were 185 startups registered from all regions of Brazil and even from other countries.

8 – Joinville, city of bicycles. This story began in the 1960s. Tupy had almost 4,000 cycling workers and, therefore, specific locations were built to leave the bikes. It is said that this is where the term “bicycle rack” came from. At the time of leaving the factories, it was possible to witness bicycle congestion. Currently, of the approximately 10,000 employees, we have 3,500 cyclists, including employees and service providers, who arrive and leave by bicycle every day, in the three shifts of the Company.

Tupy celebrates the 172nd anniversary of Joinville and now you have the half fact promised at the beginning of the text. Surely you have someone in your family or know a person who works or has worked at Tupy and is part of this story.
