Biotechnology startup is the new accelerator of Tupy’s ShiftT

News

March 8, 2023

Startup of Rio Grande do Norte founded by five biologists is the first selected for the second cycle of ShiftT, the startup accelerator of Tupy

MicroCiclo, a company that offers technology for treating oily waste through the use of microorganisms, is the first selected to have its business accelerated in the second cycle of ShiftT, Tupy’s startup accelerator. Born within the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, the biotechnology startup is managed by researchers, masters and doctors who have entrepreneurship as a brand.

After years of research and development at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Microciclo appears in 2019 as an academic spin-off, to explore an intellectual property generated from a scientific work developed by the researchers. “For fifteen years, the multidisciplinary team from the Laboratory of Molecular and Genomic Biology (LBMG) has employed techniques from environmental genetics, petroleum microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics in research. From this team, the founders of the company left with the mission of reframing the treatment of oily waste using science as a greater ally,” says the CEO and Co-founder of MicroCiclo, Carolina Minicelli, who reinforces that the startup is the result of the union, work and management of her and four other women.

MicroCiclo develops genetic mapping intelligence and combination of bacteria to decontaminate industrial waste, focusing on oily emulsions. This eliminates the need to transport waste to landfills, reducing the risk of environmental accidents and expanding the possibility of water reuse.  The solution is 100% Brazilian, with low cost and risk. From a biological product, it eliminates the generation of toxic by-products, and promotes the circular economy, which is Tupy’s business model.

“To generate shared value, we intend to explore new possibilities for applying MicroCiclo’s technology during the proof of concept,” says Karollyne Correia, who leads ShiftT’s initiatives. The engineer also explains that the biotech startup was one of 85 companies registered to participate in the second cycle of the acceleration program and will have the opportunity to benefit from the connection with the entire Tupy structure.

About the Acceleration Program

ShiftT’s value-building and relationship with its partners is strengthened by an acceleration model that has a unique value proposition. The first differential is in the concept of equity free, in which the entrepreneur does not have to renounce the part of his company to participate in the acceleration process. In addition, the Proof of Concept (POC) is remunerated and the intellectual property and talents of startups are respected.

Here is part of the list of startups that have already been accelerated by ShiftT: Green Fuel, inventor of a system for combustion engines that reduces gas emissions and fuel consumption through the use of hydrogen; Exy, which created a wearable exoskeleton that reduces the effort of its users, contributing to employee ergonomics; Hedro,  HYPERLINK “https://www.hedro.com.br/” \t “_blank” which develops technologies to instrument industrial, commercial and rural environments with intelligent wireless sensors; and Pix Force, which offers computer vision and machine vision solutions, based on artificial intelligence and machine learning.

New accelerated startups in the second cycle will be announced in the coming days and the opening of registrations for the third cycle is scheduled for the beginning of the second half of this year.
