Tupy stands out at the Ecology Expression Award

The award will be delivered at the Sustainable Management Forum in Florianópolis

Tupy, a Brazilian multinational company that is a reference in the production of structural components for capital goods, is one of the winners of the 29th Ecology Expression Award (2023-2022) with the project “Desenvolvimento de alternativas para a substituição parcial do coque na fundição de ferro” (Development of alternative solutions for the partial replacement of coke in iron casting). Created by Editora Expressão, the award is certified by the Ministry of Environment and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) as the most important award in Brazil in the business segment. This is the seventh time that Tupy’s projects have been recognized by the award.

Of the 161 projects registered, Tupy’s was among the 26 projects selected, standing out in the category “Mineral resources conservation”. The awarded initiative refers to the recycling of carbon briquettes, also known as recycled coke, developed at the Joinville Plant, in Santa Catarina. Since last year, the initiative has been used in all Company units.

The use of such an alternative source of heat, partially replacing coke, has several benefits, such as the reduction in the consumption of a non-renewable natural resource; the reinsertion of residue in the production chain in the form of input, thus fostering the circular economy; and the reduction of greenhouse gas emission.

“This project makes us very proud because it allowed us to maintain the combustion efficiency required by the casting furnaces while increasing energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint”, says Diego Felippe, Tupy’s Environment Corporate Manager.

In addition to this initiative, Tupy carries out other Circular Economy-related actions. Last year, the Company transformed around 500 thousand tons of scrap into high-value-added products, used more than 275 thousand tons of sand from recycled sources, and stopped consuming about 1 million cubic meters of water, due to reuse that, in some units, reaches 100%.
