APAE Betim students grow vegetable patches in partnership with Tupy Transformers

Harvested vegetables are destined for meals at the institution and vegetable patch-related activities help develop the students’ cognitive and coordination skills

Beet, iceberg and green leaf lettuce, chard, mustard, cabbage leaves and cherry tomato are some of the vegetables and fruits the students attending APAE/Centro, in the municipality of Betim, grow in partnership with Tupy Transformers, the Company’s volunteer program. The activity was divided into two parts: soil preparation and structure arrangement; and the planting of vegetables.

In addition to complementing school meals, the project can be a real outdoor lab. The students learn from practice about plant development, the life of insects, the origin of food, the importance of nutrition education, as well as the care for the environment, while connecting with nature and being taught what they can do.

“It’s deeply satisfying to be able to do these small acts and positively contribute to the transformation of someone else’s reality within the institution. I feel extremely accomplished and happy,” stated Daniel de Alcântara, an APAE Betim employee.

Tupy Transformers is planning new initiatives to be undertaken in November. “This initiative was very satisfying. When I saw how the APAE students were excited to plant vegetables, I grew more certain that we are on the right track. Our small acts can’t change the world, but they surely change the lives of those in need,” stated Nilson Junior Silva, one of the Tupy Transformers program volunteers.

“Caring for the community is not only one of Tupy’s values but also a part of our trajectory and culture. For this reason, it is important that we replicate the Volunteer Program across our units, encouraging our employees to engage in the development of local communities,” says Hugo Zierth, Tupy’s Investor Relations and Sustainability Manager.
